The Stour Valley

How to find your chosen starting church.

General Directions for The King’s Wood area & car parking for each church:

The churches are spread around the King’s Wood, part of a XIIIth century royal hunting forest favoured by King John between 5 & 10 miles west of Canterbury.  Chilham station which has an hourly service on the London to Ramsgate line) is half a mile away from the church.  The village sits within the junction of the A28 road to Ashford & the A252 towards Maidstone & M20 for London.

Godmersham & Boughton Aluph are off the A28 and Molash & Challock are off the A252.  The A251 Ashford to Faversham road provides a link between Boughton Aluph and Challock.  The King’s Wood lies within this road triangle.

Chilham, St Mary’s Church.  Postcode: CT4 8BY.

The limited parking in the village centre is intended for residents, so there is a large Council Free Car Park clearly signposted along the A252 westbound towards Maidstone from the A28 Ashford Road junction.   Turn left beside the Fire Station then right to park near the public toilets for a short walk up to the village square.  The church is beyond the White Horse Inn.

Molash, St Peter’s Church.  Postcode: CT4 8HD

Continuing on the A252 towards Maidstone until the George Inn, turn right into the narrow lane by a small repair garage.  (From Maidstone turn left opposite the George Inn).  The church is at the end, with car parking as indicated in the churchyard.  Watch for walkers on Church Lane.

Challock, St Cosmas & St Damian Church.  Postcode: TN25 4DB.

Further along the A252 after the A251 roundabout, the first left turn after a Farm Shop enters Challock village. (From Maidstone turn right after passing the post office lane). Church Lane weaves about 3/4 mile into farm land, down a steep hill to a single house. The field opposite is used as the event car park; the church is a short way left up a track (disabled can park beside it). NB. Watch for walkers between the village & its church.

Godmersham, St Lawrence the Martyr Church.  Postcode: CT4 7DT

From the A252 junction at Chilham on the A28 Ashford Road, continue over the crossroads by Godmersham village hall (glancing briefly at the church in the right) slow down & carefully turn right just after crossing the River Stour.  Roadside parking is available just past the church.  (Approaching from Ashford the sharp turning left is at the end of a long straight descent).

Boughton Aluph, All Saints’ Church.  Postcode:  TN25 4EU

Further along the A28 & shortly after the Wye crossroads, take the narrow turning right beside a house.  Where the road turns left to the village keep straight on; the large field before the church entrance is used for parking. (From Ashford ignore the Wye crossroads to take first left).
